LEARNING
CHILDREN'S SUNDAY SCHOOL
10:00 a.m. - 10:45 a.m.
(The classroom locations are marked in our education buildings.
Background checks are completed on all nursery and children teachers and workers.)
Ages birth to two, Nursery class: The nursery is staffed by caring workers and is equipped with all the resources and materials for infant to toddler care.
Ages three through fourth grade: Our children use the Workshop Rotation Model for Sunday School. Children rotate weekly to crafts, story time, music, or cooking, experiencing each lesson using different learning styles.
Workshop Rotation Model in a nutshell: Teaching major Bible stories and concepts through workshops: an Art workshop, Drama, Cooking, and Games. One Bible story is taught in all of the workshops for eight weeks rotating the kids to a different workshop each week. They get each workshop twice during the series.
The Workshop Rotation Model concentrates on the major stories of the Bible over and over again. The model's philosophy recognizes that kids not only love repetition, but they need it to develop a lasting memory and understanding of content. Traditional designs have lessons with six or more different steps, a game, a craft, Bible study and music all in 45 minutes left our teachers breathless and was too rapid a pace for children to actually grasp the stories
The children are divided into 2 age groups, preschool and elementary and have a teacher for each workshop. Teachers only teach once a month and always teach the same workshop. We have been using the rotation model for Cokesbury Sunday school for about 6 years. The kids love it, the teachers love it, and I can't ever imagine going back to the old way.
On 5th Sundays we have movie day. We watch a movie related to the lessons, usually Veggie Tales. We put blankets out on the floor and have popcorn and drinks. 5th Sundays usually fall at the beginning or end of a lesson series so it is a great opportunity to lead into a series or celebrate what we have learned.
